Book Review: Tales From the Western Generation by Matthew Apsokardu

hardcoverI’m very excited!  Tomorrow is a big book launch day for my friend, Matthew Apsokardu!

I had the honor and privilege to be invited by Matthew Apsokardu to read his new book, Tales From the Western Generation.  I didn’t know what to expect because personally I am not much of a historian when it comes to martial arts or karate; however, I’ve always been interested in the development of the arts and the individuals who have paved the way for the rest of us.

Matthew’s book contains all the elements of tradition, history, and evolution about karate that all we long to hear.  It explains why we are where we are today by exploring the rich heritage, beginnings, background, and transformation of the arts that have taken place over time.  Matthew describes the early pioneers and the era of growth of martial arts; the cultural influences in the early 1900’s through the influx of martial arts in the mid 1950’s; and the initiation of the tournament scene stretching from the 1960’s into the 1970’s.

While this background information is compelling, the best parts of the book are the interviews of historically vibrant martial artists and trendsetters who have made vital contributions to the martial arts industry and have tremendously impacted the martial arts world. Their personal stories set the foundation for current day martial artists who yearn to better understand the history of their own study and practice.

This very practical, interesting, and informative book, well-written by Matthew Apsokardu, is a must read for all who wish to delve deeper into their own personal martial arts  journey through a clarification of the past and its influence on the future.

I highly recommend this book to all martial artists.
